Naming with precision

“Stressed”, “fine”, “bad” and “off” are containers, not names. A container tells you that something is happening. A name tells you what it is about — and what it is about tells you what would actually help.

Container More precise possibilities Why the precision matters
Stressed rushed · overloaded · unprepared · trapped · responsible for too much · uncertain · behind Overloaded needs subtraction. Unprepared needs time. Uncertain needs information. Three different actions.
Bad ashamed · guilty · disappointed · lonely · flat · unwell · grieving Guilt points at a repair. Shame points at self-attack. Loneliness points at contact.
Angry dismissed · blamed unfairly · interrupted · let down · powerless · protective · rushed Each version implies a different conversation — or none at all.
Anxious exposed · unprepared · waiting · responsible · out of control · physically activated with no threat present Waiting needs tolerating. Unprepared needs preparing. In practice these are opposites.
Fine tired · numb · avoiding · genuinely settled · too busy to check “Fine” is the most common way to skip the whole process.
Overwhelmed too many inputs · too many decisions · no recovery time · no clear first step Three of these are solved by removing something; one is solved by sequencing.

Naming is not analysis

Precise naming takes about thirty seconds. It is not an investigation into your childhood and it is not an argument with yourself. One word, plus what it is about. If the naming step is taking ten minutes, it has become rumination — stop, and move to a decision about what to do next.

Accepting is not approving

Accepting an emotion is not agreeing with it, approving of it, or resigning to it. It is declining to add a second problem on top of the first.

Most of what people call “an emotional day” is one emotion plus an hour of arguing with it. The argument is optional. The emotion, at that moment, is not.
