What FACS is, and what we do not publish
A short, honest account of anatomically-based facial coding — what it is for, what it requires, and why you will not find its contents reproduced here.
What it is
Anatomically-based facial coding systems describe the movement of facial muscles as discrete, observable units. Their purpose is descriptive: to allow two trained coders, working independently, to record the same facial movement in the same way. They were developed for research, and using them properly requires formal training, tested reliability against a standard, and continuing practice — typically on the order of many weeks of work before a coder is reliable.
Used as designed, such systems are a genuine contribution: they replaced impressionistic descriptions of expression with a shared vocabulary that could be checked. They describe movement. That is the whole of what they are designed to do.
What it is not

Why we publish none of its contents
- Rights. Facial coding manuals, action-unit tables, scoring keys and certification syllabi are copyrighted works belonging to their authors and publishers. We do not reproduce, paraphrase, adapt or summarise their contents, and we do not host them.
- Competence. A partial table in the hands of an untrained reader is worse than no table at all: it produces confident coding with no reliability behind it.
- Scope. This platform publishes educational and documentation resources. A coding system used as an inference engine about people’s inner states falls outside what we are willing to publish.
- Honesty. The commercial market around facial reading substantially over-states what the underlying science supports. We would rather lose the traffic than participate in it.
If you need to learn a formal coding system
Obtain it from its rights holder and complete their training and reliability testing. Then work under supervision until your agreement with an experienced coder is established. There is no shortcut, and anybody selling one is selling confidence rather than skill.
